Position Summary

The University of Memphis, Department of Anthropology, invites applications for 1-2 tenure-track Assistant Professor positions. We are interested in applicants who work at the intersection of social theory and applied anthropology. Topical and geographic focus are open, although a focus on medical anthropology or design/business and organizational anthropology are desirable. We are particularly interested in medical anthropologists whose research focuses on maternal-child well-being, minority health and health disparities, and/or health policy. In the area of design/business or organizational anthropology, ideal applicants should possess the requisite knowledge and skills to train and mentor anthropology students for careers in business and design. The position/s will begin August 2018.

The U of Memphis offers the BA in Anthropology and a nationally recognized MA program in Applied Anthropology established in 1976 with an emphasis on engaged scholarship, including a concentration in Medical Anthropology. Qualifications include a PhD in anthropology in hand by June 1, 2018. The successful candidates will contribute to teaching introductory undergraduate courses and area/topical studies, as well as courses at the graduate level, with additional opportunities to develop and teach online courses. Strong methodological skills, the ability to train students in a range of data collection and analysis techniques, and experience in evaluation research, are desirable. Must demonstrate a commitment to developing opportunities for students to engage in local/regional research and in mentoring graduate students in anthropological practice.
