Minimum Position Qualifications

A minimum of one year of experience in grounds and turf maintenance using a variety of specialized motorized tools OR one year of experience as a Landscape Worker I at the University of Memphis, and the successful completion of all required Landscape Worker II – Athletics training.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Special Conditions

Initial screening will begin November 8, 2017.

The department is especially interested in candidates with the following:

Proficiency to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

Proficiency to work with power equipment such as chain saws, stump grinders, tractors and sweeper trucks.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday
7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Must be available to work a non-standard work week when necessary, which may include nights, weekends and holidays.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and push or pull up to 250 pounds with appropriate tools or moving equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and color vision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions, chemicals, fumes and airborne particles, outdoor spaces and is required to climb ladders to access equipment in high and/or precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-Ability to read, write, and follow verbal instructions.
-Knowledge of the practices, tools, materials and machines used in grounds and turf maintenance operations.
-Knowledge of infield clay(s)/skinned areas and applicable maintenance practices.
-Physical ability to perform work involving standing, stooping, operating equipment, and lifting of materials and equipment.
-Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
-Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Job Duties

Duties & Responsibilities

Turf Maintenance:

Assists in the preparation and maintenance of all facilities for practices, events and games.

Assists in the layout and painting of athletic fields.

Operates paint machines, skid steer, aerifiers, sweepers, verti-cuters, top dressers and reel mowers.

Duties & Responsibilities

Grounds Care:

Cleans, maintains and repairs lawn care tools and equipment.

May assist with the mixing and application of chemicals for weed control.

Maintains grounds; water, rakes, mows trims and edges lawns and shrubbery.

Maintains work area in a clean, neat and orderly manner.

Picks up and bags litter, broken glass and tree limbs.

Plants shrubs, trees, flowers and other plants.
Re-sods or reseeds barren areas.

Answers questions and provides information to staff, faculty, students, and visitors.
