Position Summary

The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders seeks a dynamic and innovative Dean to serve as chief academic and administrative officer of the School, its Clinic, and its Center of Excellence. The Dean will provide primary leadership for the School, which includes three graduate programs (MA, AuD, PhD), and a growing undergraduate American Sign-Language course sequence. The Dean will also be expected to develop partnerships within the University, creating an environment of excellence through academic as well as clinical vision. The Dean will be committed to excellence in research and scholarship, in teaching and pedagogy, and in service. The Dean will oversee operations of the Memphis Speech and Hearing Center and coordinate with affiliated organizations, such as Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, Memphis Speech & Hearing, Inc., and UT Health Science Center. As the director of the Center for Research Initiatives and Strategies for the Communicatively Impaired (CRISCI), a state Center of Excellence, the Dean will provide transformative direction and oversight. The successful candidate should be able to build and maintain strategic partnerships both within the University and in the local, state, and national community.

The Dean is responsible for program accreditation maintenance, program growth and evaluation, School and clinic policy, faculty/staff evaluation and tenure/promotion, as well as grants, contracts, and research development. Additionally, the Dean formulates and administers the School budget, carries out fundraising efforts for the School in collaboration with the Office of Development, and fosters community relations and resource development. Classroom teaching, student research supervision and mentorship may be expected.

Minimum Position Qualifications

The Dean of the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders should have substantial achievement in leadership, scholarship, and administration. The Dean is expected to be committed to shared governance and open communication and to provide the energy and vision needed to grow and enhance the excellence of the University of Memphis programs. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of:
• An earned doctorate in Communication Sciences and Disorders or in a related discipline.
• A distinguished record of scholarship, publication, and professional accomplishment commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
• A record of excellence in teaching and graduate student mentorship.
• A record of budget preparation, responsible fiscal management, and resource allocation.
• Demonstrated leadership and administrative success in a post-secondary setting.
• Commitment to excellence in all educational and clinical programs, as well as enthusiasm, initiative, and vision in academic and clinical program development.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for relating effectively and tactfully with administrators/staff at all levels within the University, School faculty/staff/students, and the larger community.
• Ability to define problems, conceptualize and prioritize goals, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and exercise informed judgment.
