Position Summary

The Dean of the School of Public Health serves as chief academic officer of the School and reports directly to the Provost. The Dean is responsible for all the academic programs and operational functions of the School. Responsibilities include:
• developing a strategic plan to promote the Vision, Mission and Values of the University through the activities and programs of the School of Public Health
• providing effective leadership and advocacy for the School of Public Health’s programs and faculty within the University community and the community at large
• articulating a compelling vision for the School of Public Health and the demonstrated ability to put this vision into practice
• overseeing the development, assessment and implementation of academic programs to maintain accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)
• enhancing the School of Public Health’s reputation locally, nationally, and internationally through the support of scholarship activities
• collaborating with other disciplines and professions in representing the School of Public Health and the University in various environments
• budgeting and resource allocation for the School of Public Health
• securing external resources to support the School of Public Health’s Mission
• supporting and fostering diversity within the School of Public Health

Minimum Position Qualifications

In addition to an earned doctorate in and/or a medical degree from an accredited institution in a discipline related to/within Public Health, candidates must be eligible to hold the rank of full professor and demonstrate:

• first-hand experience with accreditation policies and procedures of the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) in order to successfully maintain accreditation for the School of Public Health
• visionary leadership and the demonstrated ability to advance the School of Public Health to meet 21st century public health needs through teaching, research, and advocacy
• strategic planning to establish an agenda for translating research into action that will have a measurable impact on the public’s health
• established administrative strengths and abilities, including: constructive problem solving; commitment to recruitment, retention, and faculty development; and collaborative and accessible leadership style
• an outstanding record of scholarship, research, teaching, and community service consistent with a senior-level university appointment
• a demonstrated commitment to translational research and health equity
• appreciation for public health practice and competencies needed to prepare future public health leaders and health administrators
• the ability to manage budgets and resources
• a commitment to promoting diversity among the faculty, staff, and student populations
• effectiveness in interpersonal relations, including the ability to initiate and sustain interdisciplinary collaborations
• openness to faculty, staff, and student views
• successful experience in building community partnerships and securing external funds
• ability to embrace technology in support of the School of Public Health’s educational and research enterprises
• ability to effectively advocate for the profession at local, state, and national level
