Position Summary

The University of Memphis Department of Communication is seeking a Department Chair beginning August, 2018. With focus areas including rhetoric and media studies, health and relational communication, and film and video production, the department seeks an applicant with a national reputation who has made a significant contribution to the discipline of Communication. The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population, and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.

The Chair is responsible for leading the department in strategic planning and curriculum development at the undergraduate and graduate levels, recruitment, external funding efforts, community engagement, supervision and evaluating faculty and staff, and stewarding on-site campus locations, including online programming. The Chair will teach two courses per academic year and serve on graduate committees, including directing PhD dissertations. The Chair represents the Department in the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the University, and the Memphis community and is charged with leading processes that shape the curriculum and articulate the departmental and college mission to internal and external constituencies.

Minimum Position Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in Communication or a related field appropriate to the Department’s profile, have a strong record of scholarship, experience teaching and advising at the graduate and undergraduate levels and provide clear evidence of administrative experience in the areas of strategic planning, curriculum development and assessment, budgeting, external funding, recruitment, personnel and external relations. Demonstrated achievement and national distinction in the candidate’s area of specialty must be sufficient to warrant appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.

With a enrollment of 20,000 students, the University of Memphis is a leading metropolitan research university, noted for drawing on the strengths and challenges of our urban setting and region. One of six departments in the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the Department of Communication includes 20 full-time faculty members, approximately 50 graduate students (MA and PhD),and 270 undergraduate majors. The Chair of the Department of Communication oversees a program at the University of Memphis-Lambuth, as well as satellite and online programs. At the undergraduate and MA levels, we offer concentrations in Communication, and Film and Video production. At the PhD level, we offer programs in Rhetoric and Media Studies, and Health and Relational Communication. The Department houses WUMR, the only exclusive jazz radio station format in the Memphis area, TV/Film production studios, and sound and graphics labs.

Both our graduate and undergraduate programs present a rigorous and intellectually stimulating course of study dealing with communication in its various historical, ethical, social, and cultural dimensions. Our scholars in rhetoric, film and video, media studies, and communication find a wealth of research and teaching opportunities in Memphis, including our historical engagement with the civil rights movement; our ongoing collaboration with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States; and our connection to Memphis Theological Seminary.
